HOW TO GROW GUIDE:
1 .Preparing to Plant Potatoes
1:1. Cut larger seed potatoes into pieces with at least one or two eyes (bud-like protrusions that will grow roots) each.
1:2. Allow cut surfaces to air-dry for a day to form a protective layer, that defends against disease.
1:3. The best planting period is early spring after the last frost, or late summer for a fall harvest.
2. Planting your Potatoes
2:1. Select a well-draining, sunny location and dig a narrow trench about 5 inches deep and wide.
2:2. Place potato pieces in the trench, roughly 12 inches apart, eyes facing up, and cover with soil.
2:3. Wait for roots to sprout out of the ground, and then hill up soil around the base of the plant
3. Growing your Potatoes
3:1. Ensure soil is consistently moist (not water- logged), in sunlight, and not cold (10˚C min).
3:2. Get some “10-10-10” (refers to nutrient ratio) fertilizer, follow instructions on the packaging.
3:3. Monitor for disease / pests like potato beetles and control infestations (Get help online).
4. Harvesting your Potatoes
4:1. Harvest when plants have flowered, and foliage begins to turn yellow and die back.
4:2. Gently dig around the plant, avoiding damage, and unearth with your hands.
4:3. Cure harvested potatoes in a cool, ventilated, dark place for 1-2 weeks, avoiding light exposure.
HINTS & TIPS:
Although you need to wait until all risk of frost has gone, and the weather has become warmer, you will get the best chance of a great harvest the earlier you sow your seeds.
The later in the season you sow your seeds, then the later your potatoes will emerge.
If you over-crowd an area with seeds, they will fight against each other. If this happens, you can thin out the seedlings to let the others have a chance to grow.
Don’t be disheartened if it takes longer than you were expecting, it’s important to have a little patients when growing from seed.
AND REMEMBER:
It is best to sow your seeds as soon as possible after purchase but in most cases, you can keep left-over seed mixture to sow again the following year. Store in a cool, dry place. (Always check the sow by date on the back / base of packaging.)
